French drains and sump pumps both move water — but they move it in fundamentally different ways and solve different parts of the drainage problem. What a French Drain Actually Does
A French drain is a passive collection system. A fabric-lined trench filled with washed gravel and a perforated pipe at the bottom intercepts groundwater as it moves through the soil. Water enters the system through the gravel, drops into the pipe, and is carried away by gravity to a discharge point. There are no moving parts. The system depends entirely on slope — minimum 1% (one inch of fall per ten feet of run) — to function.
French drains are the workhorse of foundation protection on Beaumont Clay. They handle the slow, chronic groundwater migration that causes most of the foundation damage in our area. They do not require electricity, do not have wear parts, and a properly installed French drain runs maintenance-free for 30 to 50 years.
What a Sump Pump Actually Does
A sump pump is an active discharge mechanism. Water collects in a pit (the "sump basin"), a float switch detects when the water reaches a set level, and an electric pump activates and pushes the water through a discharge pipe to a higher elevation — out of a basement, up a slope, or to a curb cut at the street. Without a sump pump, that water would just sit in the pit until it slowly soaked back into the soil.
Sump pumps do not collect water on their own. They move water that something else has already brought to them. That "something else" is almost always a French drain, a surface drain, or both feeding into the pit.
When You Need a French Drain Alone
You need a French drain by itself — no sump pump — when all of these are true:
- The lot has at least a 1% slope from the inlet to a legal discharge point.
- The discharge point is at the same elevation or lower than the lowest inlet.
- Power loss is not a concern for the system's primary function.
- There is no basement or sub-grade space that water has to be lifted out of.
Most lots in older parts of Spring, Klein, and Tomball — homes built before 2010 with the original yard grade still intact — meet these conditions. A gravity-only French drain is the simplest, cheapest, and most reliable system you can install when the lot allows it.
When You Need a Sump Pump (and a French Drain Feeding It)
You need to add a sump pump to your drainage system when any of these are true:
- The lot is too flat for gravity discharge. This is the dominant case in newer master-planned communities like Northampton, Windrose, and parts of Creekside. The grade was engineered to minimum spec, the natural fall is well under 1%, and there is no path for water to leave by gravity alone.
- The discharge point is uphill of the inlet. Some lots — especially those at the bottom of a sloped subdivision — have nowhere downhill to send water that does not cross another property. A pump lifts the water to a curb-cut or storm-drain inlet that gravity cannot reach.
- Water has to leave a basement, crawl space, or sub-slab area. Almost no homes in Spring, TX have basements, but where they exist, a sump pump is non-negotiable. The same applies to interior sub-slab French drains in retrofit jobs.
The critical thing to understand: in every one of these cases, you need both a French drain (or surface drain) to collect the water and a sump pump to discharge it. The pump is not an alternative to the drain; it is an addition.

- Adding a sump pump always costs more than gravity-only. The pit, pump, discharge plumbing, and check valve are real material and labor on top of the drain itself.
- A battery or water-powered backup pump is a separate add-on we recommend in any power-loss-prone area — cheap insurance against a failed primary pump during a storm.
- Maintenance cost over 10 years is dramatically lower for a gravity-only system than for a pumped system, because gravity does not have wear parts.

How to Tell Which System Your Spring, TX Home Needs
The single fastest test is to look at the elevation of the lowest inlet point relative to the curb at the street. If the curb is meaningfully lower than the inlet, gravity will work and you can run a French drain to a curb cut. If the curb is at the same elevation or higher, you need a pump.
The second test is the speed of standing water clearance. If your yard typically clears within 24 hours of a rain event, the soil is at least functioning as a slow drain — gravity is moving water somewhere — and a French drain alone can usually accelerate that path. If standing water lingers for 48 to 72 hours, the soil is fully saturated and the only practical exit for new water is mechanical.
